5:30:00 PM

  • Location: El Paso County IT Building  Get Map

  • Topic: Server Sprawl Problem

  • Presenter: Todd Behrbaum, PolyServe

  • Description: Tens to hundreds of instances of SQL Server are deployed on dedicated servers. Server utilization rates lurk in the low teens. Why? Because shared servers complicate capacity planning and responding to unplanned capacity needs takes too long. SQL Server is also deployed on dedicated servers because this limits the impact of server failures to single instances. For instances requiring high availability, active-passive clusters further decrease server utilization rates and drive up the cost of high availability to a point where many instances run unprotected. These factors have caused SQL Server sprawl, whereby more than twice as many servers than required are being purchased and managed to meet current application requirements.

  • Topic: A Solution for SQL Server Automation

  • Presenter: Andrew Wright , StrataVia

  • Description: SQL Server environments are growing like wildfire, and companies are struggling to keep up with the growing demands on their often limited DBA staff. As the SQL Server presence grows, often so do the number of alerts and emails which act as thought-breakers. These thought-breakers can prevent a DBA from working on more value-add tasks such as capacity planning, tuning and optimization, and planning for the additional growth and direction of their company’s data. The historical solution has been to hire more DBAs, often causing more complexity and entering into a vicious cycle of hiring DBA after DBA. Tools are sometimes purchased to help alleviate the DBA workload, but the workload does not seem to reduce. Database Automation offers a credible solution to help DBAs scale effectively and receive less thought-breakers throughout their day. By bringing the benefits of standardization and automation to database administration, DBAs can reduce their workload and concentrate more of their time on higher value tasks. Thoughtfully implemented automation also scales with growth in data and infrastructure, keeping undue complexity at bay.

SQL Server 2005’s graphical query plan output is similar to SQL Server 2000’s, but there are some important differences. We will cover the basics of reading various kinds of query plans, both text based and graphical. We will also look at the XML showplan feature available through the SQL Server Management Studio and through the SQL Server Profiler and discuss the various uses for plans in XML format.

  • Topic: Encryption and Certificates in SQL Server

  • Presenter: Volkan Buyukacar,

  • Description: With all the privacy regulations coming into scene data encryption is becoming more important for the businesses every day. Luckily the tools to employ encryption are becoming more available and easier to set up and support also. Microsoft also contributed to this momentum by integrating new encryption capabilities into SQL Server 2005. Although the encryption is made easy in SQL 2005, there is still some hesitation against these tools due to the bad experiences from complicated encryption tools in the past. In this 50 minute session we will try to cover encryption in SQL 2005 at an introductory level to remove some of the prejudices against encryption.

  • Topic: Nordic O/R dbms

  • Presenter: Paul Nielsen,

  • Description: Nordic (New Object/Relational Design) is a full featured, Open Source project implemented in a strong T-SQL abstraction layer. It supports super class/sub classes, inheritance, polymorphism, complex inheritable associations that are tied to objet workflows, and object profiles. Version 2.0 presents a cleaner API, and a generic sample .NET UI. While an O/R dbms design is not appropriate for every project, applications with many is-a relationships, flexible associations benefit from moving from 2-D relational modeling to 3-D OOA/D modeling. Nordic v 2.0 will be officially launched as an open source project November 21 at SQL Teach in Vancouver.

  • Topic: Columnar Databases Overview

  • Presenter: Joshua Jones, Consortio Services

  • Description: Most SQL Server DBAs know that SQL Server is a Relational Database system. They also take for granted, without even realizing it, that SQL Server is a row store; that is, data is stored in terms of rows, each row being a unique record with various values assigned to it for each column. This format works great for retrieving specific values of a column for a given record, or set of records. However, it can be cumbersome to retrieve all values for all records for a given column. Columnar databases are a way of storing data that optimizes searching data in this manner. In this presentation, we’ll talk about what a column-based database is, how its built, and what applications there are for it in the real world. We’ll discuss its key differences from row-based databases, and what the potential impact of this new database type is in the commercial realm for SQL Server professionals.
